He was born in a well-civilized family; as his father was a classical music industry executive, and his mother was a staff editor for New York Times.

His love for food developed in his youth when he first tried his first oyster on an oyster fisherman’s boat on a vacation in France.

While pursuing his studies, he worked for seafood restaurants in Provincetown, Massachusetts, which made him more determined to pursue his career in cooking.

He had a long-time addiction to cocaine and heroin in his college time.

He then attended The Culinary Institute of America and gained experience of working in some renowned restaurants of New York City like Supper Club, Sullivan’s, and One-Fifth Avenue.

In 1998, he joined Brasserie Les Halles, a restaurant based in Manhattan, as an executive chef and worked there till the restaurant got bankrupt and closed in 2017.

After gaining a lot of culinary skills, he penned down a book titled “Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly” in 2000, which was considered the bestselling book that year by New York Times.

In 2001, he was named “Food Writer of the Year” by Bon Appetit magazine for Kitchen Confidential.

His next two publications- A Cook’s Tour in 2001 and The Nasty Bits in 206 were also New York Times bestsellers.

After getting divorced with his first wife, he fell in love with a restaurant hostess, Ottavia and the two also twinned with a matching tattoo of a chef’s knife and soon, tied the knot within 11 days of their meet.

He and Ottavia were blessed with a daughter and after becoming a father, he quit smoking and also had stopped intake of drugs before.

He once shared that he never misses his training whether he is at home or at some other place. He was very much conscious of his health and he practiced jiu-jitsu and that was the reason behind his good health and physique. He also got a blue belt in 2015.

Although he was a great cook, he was also a food buff.

He was offered to start his own show on Food Network, i.e. a food and world-travel show based on his memoirs Kitchen Confidential, and in January 2002, his show entitled “A Cook’s Tour” was premiered. The show completed 35 episodes successfully.
